CHELSEA 1 - 1 BOLTON
5/11/2008 3:15:00 PM
An Andriy Shevchenko goal in the second half was unable to secure the vital victory Chelsea needed to pressure Manchester United for the Premier League title. Despite Chelsea’s best efforts throughout the season Manchester United secured the Premier League title with a 2-0 victory against Wigan Athletic. Manager Avram Grant made a number of changes with Michael Essien moving back into defence while Alex was once again alongside John Terry as the Players' Player of the Year, Ricardo Carvalho, recovered from a back injury. Ashley Cole also replaced Wayne Bridge. Claude Makelele took up his role in central midfield to make his 200th appearance for the Blues and Joe Cole was back in the starting line-up replacing Nicolas Anelka, who was forced to sit out the fixture due to transfer regulations. An eventful game under bright sunshine at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea lose captain John Terry within 10 minutes of the start, carried of with a dislocated elbow. Essien then moved into a central role while Juliano Belletti came on for the right-back position. Despite Terry’s injury Chelsea controlled the opening to the game with quick incisive passing and quickly created two chances for Didier Drogba, both of which missed by only the smallest distances. Joe Cole was proving a tricky opponent for Bolton as he sent a through ball into the box, allowing Malouda and Drogba to force Bolton keeper Al Habsi into a save. Cole again tested Bolton minutes later when he sent a cross towards the far post only for the Bolton keeper to leap high and prevent Ballack from heading in. It wasn't long before Joe Cole went for goal himself as he sent a shot low towards the left corner, but Al Habsi was alert to his advances and once again denied Chelsea an opener. As the game entered injury time in the Ballack and Essien both found themselves only inches from putting the ball into the net. Grant made one change at half time bring Sheva on to replace Makelele and playing two up front. The change was positive and Chelsea began the second half brightly as Malouda sent a lob dipping towards the net from 30 yards out, but his effort was tipped over the bar, before Belletti smashed a shot goal-ward from inside the box with Al Habsi saving acrobatically. As the hour mark approached, Bolton midfielder McCann continued to frustrate Chelsea as he slid to block a Lampard shot destined for goal, before Drogba broke down the centre and curled a shot inches over the bar. Chelsea’s breakthrough eventually came when following sustained pressure Andriy was able to latch onto a Frank Lampard shot and find the back of the net from 6 yards. Chelsea continued to press after the goal to put pressure on Manchester United and ensure their required victory with Joe Cole coming close again with a 25 yard effort which was saved by the keeper. With just over 10 minutes remaining of the game Cole was replaced by John Mikel Obi and for the first time in the match Bolton applied pressure and it was only a combination of the bar and Ashley Cole that prevent a Matty Taylor header from equalising. With just seconds to go and the result in Wigan all but confirmed Chelsea conceded an equaliser as Taylor fired in off Cech's legs. The draw meant Chelsea finished the season once again undefeated at Stamford Bridge but the final table read Manchester United - 87, Chelsea - 85. Chelsea (4-3-3) Cech; Essien, Alex, Terry (c), A Cole; Ballack, Makelele (Shevchenko 45), Lampard; J Cole (Mikel 78), Drogba, Malouda. Bolton (4-3-3) Al Habsi; Steinsson, A O'Brien, Cahill; McCann, Nolan (c), J O'Brien; Diouf (Stelios 68), Davies, Taylor. Search
